Chapter 20. The black wolf
Ronnie found herself walking in the woods, searching for something or someone. She walked further into the woods. It was dark in the woods but she didn't care. She could feel the hairs on her neck rising and she didn't know why. She soon
found out, because out of nowhere, a pack of werewolves appeared in front of her. Their eyes were anything but kindness or sympathy. She was scared and moved slowly back. She barely made a few successful steps when the wolves, all five of them, launched toward her. She screamed and started running. It was as if they despised her.
She managed to sprint a few steps when she stumbled on a stud and fell. This gave the werewolves the opportunities they were looking for and flew straight for her. She screamed again and a bigger wolf covered her with its big, black, hairy fur. The other wolves, upon seeing the other wolf, fled for their lives.
The black wolf glanced toward her, his eyes were all sweet and full of concern. She was encircled in his embrace.
Ronnie woke up with a start and started panting. "Oh, that gave me quite a scare." She muttered and went toward the kitchen to get water to drink.
It's been almost two weeks of her living in the mansion and she was not yet adapting to it. Katie seemed to have multiple things which Ronnie could not understand.
She had to wake up every morning just to go to the gym. It was hell so she had to stop, with the excuse she didn't like gymnastics anymore. She canceled her date with Daniel with the excuse also that she had many things at hand, which was a lie. She was stressed from trying to be Katie. Mrs. Philips had been a wonderful guide. She told her everything she needed to know about Katie, her likes and dislikes and Evey other thing.
She tried doing all these things but didn't find the love for fashion Katie did. She preferred practicing her singing voice during her leisure time. Katie hadn't called her all through this time and she guessed it must be from work and all that. She talks to her mother once in a while and assured her she would come to visit anytime she's changed. Her mother had been more than happy to see that her daughter was doing ok and they weren't starving unlike before.
She went into the kitchen to get water from the fridge. She opened the fridge and took out a bottle of water. She closed the fridge and screamed in fright. Mr. Philips was standing there, glancing at her like she was lost. Ronnie seemed lost for words. She didn't know what to say as she had never come across him since her stay at the mansion.
"Hi, dad," She said with uncertainty.
He looked at her for a moment before speaking up. "What are you doing down here?"
"Trying to get me some water." She replied, smiling nervously.
"I thought you'd never come down here because you were scared of seeing a ghost, and order Zara to get it for you instead?" He asked, looking at her suspiciously.
"Maybe I've grown up enough to know that ghosts aren't real," She lied
He shrugged. "It's a good thing to grow up sometimes," He said.
"Yes dad," She said and smiled nervously
"How are you preparing for your trip tomorrow?" He asked, without blinking.
"Trip? What trip?" Ronnie asked, confused
"It's good to see you haven't changed a bit, you always forget things." He said, smiling at her
"Yeah, that me, Katie the forgetful young woman," She replied nervously
"I meant the trip down to Damon's place. You know, he called me the other day to tell me you guys have agreed to live with each other and he's com info here tomorrow to pick you up." He said
Ronnie couldn't find her voice to speak. She sighed. Her mood, dropping. "I think I'll go to sleep now,"
Mr. Philips, noticing her sudden foul mood, tried to lighten it. "You do need to be sad. Maybe the rumors aren't how everyone paints them. He might end up falling in love with you, you know," He said, trying to convince her.
"I know dad. Just pray it's not a mistake I'm making," She muttered and started going up to her room. "Goodnight dad,"
"Goodnight, see you in the morning, that's if I can," He said and sighed.
He hated seeing her like this. But there was nothing he could do. He didn't want his business to go down, as much as he didn't want to see her sad. He wanted to give her the best life has to offer. They were bethroated to each other and would get married sooner or later. He turned around and walked to his room.
Ronnie lay on the bed and sighed. She couldn't believe she was going to be living with a stranger from tomorrow. She didn't even know him, how he looks, and acts, his likes and dislikes. What should she do when she sees him?
All those thoughts kept going through her mind as she lay motionless on the bed. She sighed and tried to fight the sleep that was caving in. She didn't want to have another nightmare. But as surely as no one can predict what tomorrow holds, she slowly drifted off to a peaceful, dreamless sleep.
Daniel was busy freshening up for work that morning when a call came in. It was from the Philips house. He was the family's doctor. He answered at the second ring. "Hello," He said.
"Hello, doctor Daniel," Mrs. Philips's tiny voice rang out.
"Good morning ma'am, nice to hear from you this morning," He said
"Can you come and give me a thorough check-up, I think I'm losing out on don't basic things," She said
"When would that be?" He asked
"Oh, I'd appreciate it if you can make it immediately. I have an important business meeting in the next two hours. You can also clash in for breakfast if you don't mind," She said politely.
"No problem, I'd be there in 30 minutes," He assured and hung up.
Ronnie didn't feel like getting up from the bed. She sluggishly got up and got to the bathroom. She freshened and went down for breakfast.
She started down the stairs when she thought she heard happy laughter from downstairs. She hurried down to join in the fun when she stopped dead in her tracks.
Right in front of her, was the man she'd dreaded seeing in her present life, the man she'd always had a crush on, still as handsome as ever, Daniel.
She looked at him and debated the Idea, whether to go back inside and order Zara to bring in her breakfast or chose to join them, pretending not to know him. She settled for the first choice and turned to go.
"Katie sweetheart, why are you going back all of a sudden? Come say hello to our guest." Mrs. Philips said and Ronnie had no choice but to turn around. She cursed under her breath as she gets on over the table. She sat uncomfortably and the maid dishes her food put for her.
"The doctor here, says I'm very healthy. Is that wonderful?" Mrs. Philips asked.
"Oh, that's nice. Your health is one thing you need to take care of," She said, lowering her head, afraid she might get caught if she stared into his eyes.
Daniel, studying her this time around, smiled. "Your mum has a lot of energy. Very good for someone her age." He said
"Umm.. that's good," She replied, praying he would quit talking and just concentrate on finishing his breakfast.
"You look quite amazing. I would have sworn you look just like someone I know, but that would be delusional." He said.
"That would be insane, maybe I do look like her, but I'm not her," Ronnie said bluntly
"Yeah, I can see that, clearly," He said and shrugged
There was silence as everyone was concentrated on their meal, or rather, on their world.
Ronnie ate her food hastily and made to stand up from her seat. "I think I'm done, I'll proceed to my room. Thanks for the meal, mum." She said, and just then, someone enters the house.
He was a tall man, handsome though but can't be compared to Daniel, as per Ronnie's thoughts. He smiled at the trio having breakfast and Mrs. Philips stood up to welcome him. "Mr. Alan, welcome to our humble abode," She said, getting to meet him.
He smiled politely at her. "I don't think I have enough time for chit-chat, Mrs. Philips," He said, clearly meaning business.
Ronnie had a sick tightening in her stomach. She felt something she didn't like was about to happen.
"Is the miss ready? The boss awaits her at the mansion and we don't have to be late. You know how hates that." Alan said and smirks.
Ronnie then knew it was time to go and start the real reason she came into the mansion.
