Chapter 19. She's acting strange
Ronnie glanced at the dead phone in her hands and sighed. Zara looked at her and immediately looked down. Ronnie handed the phone to Zara again and collapsed on the bed. "You can get back, umm....you," She said and lay down on the bed to get some sleep.
Zara looked at her. She wondered if Katie has really forgotten her name or didn't just want to call her by it. She walked out of the room, leaving Ronnie to think about what just happened. Ronnie didn't care though, she guessed this was a contract marriage where the two had nothing in common. She just has to act like Katie and nothing would go wrong. With that thought, she drifted off to sleep, or she would say a short nap. Ronnie, standing by the window, looks outside and saw her childhood friends playing outside. She tries to call out to them by opening the window, she touched the handle of the window and noticed it was cracking, she tried to remove her hand but found it impossible. With a start, the window shattered into pieces. She screamed silently and heard someone's footsteps approaching her. She immediately stood up and the window readjusted to its actual position as if nothing had happened.
Ronnie woke up with a start, she sat up on the bed and breathed frantically.
"I know that wolves have some skills but not magical powers, how can I have this weird dream all over again," Ronnie muttered to herself.
She looked through the window and found it was already nighttime. Her stomach growled, letting her know she was hungry.
She didn't know if she was to go down for dinner or call on Zara to bring the meals for her. She doubted Katie would go down for dinner. She decided to try though.
She walked briskly but gently downstairs, toward the dining room and saw the maids cleaning up the dining table.
"Umm...hey," she said and the maid looked shocked.
"Ma'am." The maid replied and bowed, trying hard not to look into her eyes. As that would earn her a good measure of scolding.
"Have everyone taken their dinner?" She asked, hoping there was still something she could eat. She was starving so bad she could eat just anything.
"Yes ma'am."The maid said and made to leave.
"Wait," Ronnie began. She seemed hesitant to continue. "Is the food finished, I haven't had dinner and I'm starving." She said politely
The maid looked at her in disbelief but said nothing. "I thought you'd rather have snacks for dinner to watch your weight and maintain your shape." The maid asked, slightly scared Katie won't blow out on her.
"Oh," Ronnie said and cursed under her breath. How could Katie not tell this crucial fact about her? She couldn't eat snacks for dinner to watch a weigh that isn't there.
"Can you prepare something for me real quick?" She asked.
This time, the maid couldn't conceal her astonishment. "Yes ma'am." She replied.
"Thanks," Ronnie said, and could see the vivid shock on the maid's face.
"What would you like to eat?" The maid asked.
"Anything you think I'd, like," Ronnie said and walks off.
The maid walked toward the kitchen to tell the cook to get something for Ronnie, who she thought was Katie, to eat.
While there, she saw Zara washing the dishes and standing by her side.
"Have you noticed your boss recently, do you think she's shocked or something?" The maid asked.
Zara turned to look at her. "What do you mean? "
"I mean, look at her. She's out of herself. She asked me to prepare dinner for her. She also said thanks and said I should prepare something I thought she'd like. I mean what do I think she'd like?" The maid asked and Zara giggled. "I also noticed that. She's been acting strange today. Maybe she isn't feeling well or has hit her head on something." Zara said and they both laughed.
"Well I don't know what to say, I'd better prepare her food since the cook isn't here before she comes in and cut off my head." The maid joked and Zara smiled.
Ronnie walks up to her room with confusion.
"What was weird in what I said? I just asked the maid to prepare some food for me. I can lie to myself by being Katie that I can starve " She mumbled as she slid into her room.
She barely stayed some minute when Zara burst into the room, holding a tray of food.
"Here are your meals ma'am," She said, acing the food by the table beside the bed.
"Ok, you may leave," She ordered and Zara proceeded to exit the room.
She sat upright and stared down at her food. She ate everything on the tray and relaxed. She then decided to explore the big room.
Just as soon as she sat down by the reading table to examine the fashion magazines on the shelves, her phone rang.
"Hey, beauty. "Daniel's sweet voice echoed through the phone. Ronnie could feel a shiver from the effect his voice had on her.
"Hey." She managed to reply.
"How was your day?" He asked.
"Not quite bad." She said and smiled, thinking of the other night of their date.
"Sorry, I couldn't call you immediately yesterday when I dropped you off. I was called upon by the hospital for an emergency and it was serious." He said pleadingly.
"No problem, I was too preoccupied to notice." She replied.
"So how are you fairing," he asked.
"I'm good," she replied.
"I came over to your house today and your mum said you are working now. And not to come home often." He asked again, not knowing if he was not gonna be able to see her. "Yeah, it's a long story but I'm working now." She said and smiled.
"So does that mean they'd be no more dates for us?" He asked, unsure.
"Of course, why would you think we won't go on dates." She asked, surprised.
"You know, I thought you were working 24 hours a day." He said.
Ronnie laughed. "Dinqore big boy, we'd go on dates and many more events." She assured
"Speaking of that, how about this Saturday, would you be free?" He asked.
"Let's see how it goes, I'll let you know beforehand," She said and smiled
"Can I have the pleasure of singing you a goodnight song?" He asked and she laughed.
"Since when do you sing?" She asked, amusingly.
"Since I was a kid, I did many carols for churches and all. I quit singing when I was in junior high." He said.
"Roger on then." She said and he started singing her to bed.
(Listen to a thousand years by Christiana Perry, while reading this.)
I have died every day waiting for you
Darling don't be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I love you for a thousand more
All along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you
For a thousand years
I love you for a thousand more.
After the song, he waited for some seconds and when he didn't hear any sound from the other end, he guessed she was fast asleep and he hung up the phone. Ronnie was in dreamland all because of a romantic song sung by her crush.
