Chapter 16. Finding Trouble
When trouble comes Look for your savior - Jacqueline
Percy texted me good morning then called when I reached my apartment. We talked for a bit until he ended the call and I decided to take a nice warm bath before starting the day, burying myself with my final year school assignments. I worked on my school stuff until late in the afternoon, everything was boring as always when I hurry out of the apartment to go get lunch. I was going to Silvio's for some of their creamy lasagnas when I noticed that I was being followed. Two men with dark clothing, one was wearing a hoodie, his face was covered with the tip of his baseball cap while the other one was wearing sunglasses and black pullovers. Both men didn't take off their cap and sunglasses when they entered the restaurant. I tried to shake off my feeling by ordering my lunch and some wine to ease my nerves.
I pretend that I didn't notice them and mustered the will to casually eat my lunch, browsing my phone, while thinking who are these men and why are they following me. They both looked average build nothing seemed too familiar about them.
Knowing that I can't leave the restaurant and risk being followed by them again, my brain was busy thinking who should I contact. Maybe it's because I just had amazing sex with him, but Grady was the person I decided to call. I remembered my neighbor, Ella, and how her cousin Gemma warned me about the incident where someone was leaving a dead rat in front of their apartment door.
Gemma did tell me that she was told not to mention it to anyone, that no one was supposed to know about it. But she was worried about me and Benjamin, and she also made sure that my roommate Ben knows about it.
I tried to call Grady but he wasn't picking up, he's a freaking billionaire of course he's busy, he's probably in a meeting. I made myself appear like I was enjoying my lunch while my heart was beating so fast when one of the guys decided to pass by my table and went to the back of the restaurant.
Taking another bite of my lasagna, I fumble with my phone then my fingers started typing away on the screen.
I think I'm being followed, I'm at Silvio's. One block away from my apartment. Should I leave the restaurant and head back to my place? Can I go back to yours? (Jacqueline).
Checking on my text, I decided to erase the last line, before sending it to Grady.
I think I'm being followed, I'm at Silvio's. One block away from my apartment. (Jacqueline)
Not wanting to sound too needy after a miscall and a text, I decided to finish my lunch then call Kamaria, though I was still not sure it was related to work.
Shit, maybe it is work-related.
I was cursing on the inside when I remembered about Ghazi and his bodyguard entourage. Is he in some kind of trouble?
Trying not to seem too obvious I take another bite of my lunch. Though I was hungry and the food was delicious, I was not enjoying my meal. And I was forcing myself to look as relaxed as possible when the guy was back from the back of the restaurant and took his seat with his friend. It only takes a second for them to look at me and our eyes met and one of them smirked at me.
My body instantly shuts down, felt as if my heart dropped. It took all of my strength to look at my phone when I heard it buzzed from an incoming text.
Stay there, act casual. Don't reply to my text. I'm on my way. (Grady)
Shit! he didn't mention how long.
How long should I wait for him, I was almost finished with my lunch so I decided to call the waiter for ice cream. Not that I need the cool delicious dessert, but I have to busy myself while waiting for Grady. Hopefully, he's not an hour or two hours away.
Fuck! This is not going very well for me.
My mind was busy with scenarios of how I was going to die when the front door opens and Grady stormed inside the restaurant. He looked tall and gorgeous, his suit jacket was gone, his sleeves were tucked showing off his strong forearms. His eyes scanned the room before he quickly found me and was to my side in seconds. "Hey, baby, I'm sorry I'm late." He made a scene hugging and kissing me, making everyone look at us including the two shady guys. Grady took care of my bill and put his arm around my shoulder leading me out of the restaurant.
"My car is near, I saw them, you're going to be okay." He kissed my temple and my body relaxes immediately.
"Hey," I halted my steps when I heard someone called out, but Grady forced me to continue walking to the parking lot. "Hey, dude," another shouted but Grady hurried us and I heard a car beeped as it was being unlocked. The next thing I know Grady shoved me into the passenger side of a silver Escalade.
No driver, not the same car that he dropped me off with this morning. But when I heard the gunshots all thoughts were gone. All I heard was a low growl when Grady entered the car with a loud slam of the car door, he cursed and told me to put on my seatbelt and duck down.
From then my tears falls freely, I realized that he was shot. My body trembles thinking that I got him into my mess, thinking how can I be so stupid. I should've called Kamaria, she would've sent me one of the guards and Grady won't be hurt. "Come on, Jacqueline, snap out of it! Jacqueline!" my eyes were blurry when I straightened myself and looked at our surroundings. We were in a basement, a car park, and Grady had worn his suit jacket. He looked a bit messy but managed to get me out of the car.
"Yes, get me a doctor, the penthouse, tell Percy I'm fine." He ended the call and groaned when we stepped into the private elevator.
I was wiping my tears when he pulled me into his strong arms. "You're safe, they won't be following us here." He tilt my face and wiped my tears away before he kissed my forehead softly, I melt in his arms and sobbed, again. Hours must've passed. I had fallen asleep, still in my yoga pants and oversize pink Gucci hoodie, my feet were cold when I saw my leather flats were neatly put away by the bed.
"You scared me," Percy said walking into the room then sitting to my side, Grady was to my other side when he kissed my temple. "I'm going to leave you with Percy. I'm okay, baby. Just a little bullet wound to my arm, I need to take care of some things." Grady looked fresh, he was wearing a new shirt, moving casually as if he hadn't been shot and it made me feel better.
"Who are those guys, is Grady really fine?" I asked Percy when Grady left the room in a hurry.
"He will be, a lot is going on right now. But the main thing is that you're okay. Hey, ssh..." I was back to crying when the coldness of the situation sipped into my bones. "... it's okay, you're safe. We're going to get those guys."
"I should've called Kamaria, maybe it's..." my hands were shaking, tears falling and Percy pulled me into his arms assuring me once again that everything will be okay.
His scent draws me in, he smells like the ocean, and I let my body drown in his arms when he lay me down beside him. I was snuggling in closer, my hands roaming his body latching onto his muscular front.
Feeling the need to get close to him to erase the coldness in my insides, I reached under his shirt spreading my cold fingers on top of his warm chest. "Come here, you're so cold." Percy took off his shirt and pull the covers over both of us, taking me to his naked chest and engulfing me in his warmth. I sighed feeling him, basking in his scent, smelling his ocean-scented cologne.
"You smell the like ocean sun," I whispered, inhaling him, snuggling onto his chest and resting my cheek, feeling him rubbing my back, slipping his warm hands underneath my hoodie, letting him caress my cold backside. "You're safe now, princess."
"Hold me, don't let me go." My voice was quiet but he heard me and embrace me, kissing my hair, whispering sweet words in my ear until I close my eyes and drifted back to sleep.
