Chapter 130
Katherine's
POV
"Is everyone in the boardroom?" I asked Sophia.
"Yes, Ms. King," she said. "Everyone has arrived and is awaiting your arrival."
I nodded, rose from my chair, pulled my simple black suit straight, and headed to the boardroom.
I entered the boardroom with a serious expression, and the group of people immediately rose to their feet when they saw me.
"Morning everyone," I said as I headed to my chair. "Please take a seat."
My gaze quickly moved over every employee and director present before I took my own seat.
Sophia handed me a folder, and I opened it.
"As you all know, MDM Group's CEO has approached me regarding a project. I would like to know everyone's opinion on the subject before making a final decision."
The group of people was startled and looked at each other. They were used to John making the final decisions for the company without anyone's opinion; here I was asking for their opinion.
A man in his early fifties was the first to stand up and give his opinion.
"Ms. King," he said in a hoarse voice, "I think this project would be beneficial to the company. So why not join forces?"
"Yes," another gentleman raised his hand from his seat, "Director Jackson is right."
"I think so."
I listened attentively as more and more employees joined in the discussion.
They became excited, and I was glad that I took the opportunity to involve them in the decision-making process for taking on the project. "Very well," I said, raising my hands to quiet the room, "if all are in favor, raise your hands."
One by one, everyone raised their hands.
"Then it is settled," I said, got to my feet, and turned to Sophia, who sat next to me. "Sophia will be in charge of the project."
Sophia was slightly surprised, but she quickly stood up and replied without changing her expression under the gaze of the crowd. "Yes, Ms. King."
"Please collect the specific documents from me after the meeting."
"Yes, Ms. King."
After the money laundering scandal, I didn't trust any of the internal staff, yet even though I didn't know Sophia well enough, I had the confidence to use her on the project; she was appointed by Xavier, after all, and I trusted Xavier's opinion. "If that is all," I said, nodding, "then the meeting is adjourned."
Sophia immediately contacted MDM Group and arranged a lunch meeting with them at our local county club, and just before she left, she quickly popped her head into my office to tell me she was leaving.
I raised an eyebrow, seeing how professionally she looked. She had gone and patched up her make-up, and even though she wore a simple gray suit, she looked even more serious and presentable.
I had a feeling that William would make the negotiation difficult for her. He would go out of his way to ask difficult and complicated questions and look for errors in the contract.
At least I knew that Sophia wouldn't get easily intimidated; she would be able to stand her ground.
It was late in the afternoon when Sophia walked into my office. She had a look of exhaustion mixed with anger on her face.
I internally chuckled at her expense.
"I
I guess Alpha William was a bit difficult?" I asked.
"He was," she answered, not going into detail, and handed me the drafted contract.
I was itching to know what had happened. Was William surprised that I didn't go by myself? Was he angry?
"What happened?" I asked.
"Ms. King," she said, and her facial expression turned serious as she crossed her arms around her chest, "I did everything in my power as per your request, but Alpha William is not willing to further any negotiations with me. He only wants to deal directly with you." "I understand," I said. "Thank you." Sophia sighed, was relieved, and left my office.
I pondered for a moment on what to do and decided to take on the project myself. I wasn't willing to lose such a good opportunity based on personal issues. Instead, I would take the initiative and complete the task myself.
Three hours later, I was done and stood all proud with the newly amended contract in my hand. Let's see how many errors William will find if I tell him I've drawn up the contract myself. I was sure my plan was foolproof.
Seconds later, my phone rang, and I rolled my eyes in annoyance when I saw the caller's name.
Alpha Williams.
What were the chances that he would call now?
I sighed, said a quick prayer for strength, and answered the phone.
"Join me for dinner," William said, getting straight to the point, "to discuss the agreement properly."
"Send me the location and time," I said, and I hung up.
My driver drove me to the other side of town to a seven-star hotel called Golden Gates.
I made sure to be dressed in a full-length black dress to ensure that everything was properly covered.
I didn't expect that William would choose such a luxurious hotel. We were only to have a meal and negotiate terms.
The hotel's interior was extraordinary, with wide open spaces and high walls.
"Welcome," the hostess said with a warm smile, and before I could introduce myself, she asked if I was Ms. King.
"I am," I said, surprised. I guess William must have told her of my arrival, and my posture stiffened.
"Follow me, please," she said with a warm smile. "Alpha William has reserved a private balcony for your meeting."
Upon entering the reserved balcony, I knew this wasn't just a normal negotiation. The open-space balcony overlooked the beautiful seaside, and the scene was heartbreakingly beautiful. William had gone out of his way to make me feel uncomfortable; this looked more like a romantic date than a business negotiation.
My gaze moved over the inside of the open area with all the decorations and flowers, but what made my eyes pop out of their sockets was seeing the buffet table full of the most expensive dishes imaginable.
He is crazy, I am sure of it!
What is he expecting from me? To fall head over heels for him for his money? I have my own.
Kia growled, annoyed inside my mind seeing what I had, yet she kept her composure; she understood that this contract would mean stability for the King Group's future.
"If he dares touch us," Kia warned.
"He wouldn't," I said, cutting her off. "William is many things, but I don't think he would force us into anything. This is more of a game for him; he would take this slow and easy, looking for a way to my heart. He is testing the waters." "I don't like it!" She growled.
"Me neither," I said, "but I don't have any other choice but to agree to see him."
Kia nodded in understanding and laid down; she wasn't leaving my side anytime soon.
"Ah!" William's voice echoed from the door as he entered the room: "I see you have arrived; how is my Ms. King today?"
"I am very good," I answered, but I immediately regretted saying it.
William walked closer, and his eyes darkened.
I reached for my bag and pulled out the contract, trying to get this negotiation over and done with as soon as I could. "Alpha William's," I said coldly and handed him the contract, "as per your request, we are here to discuss the contract." William looked at the contract in my hand, knitted his eyebrows together, and looked at me, confused.
"He looks like you have hurt his feelings," Kia yapped happily inside my mind. "Is he about to cry?"
"Kia! Shhh!" I reprimanded her; she was distracting me, and if I slipped and smiled, he might think I was acting hard to get.
William recovered from his disappointment and changed techniques.
"I know," he said, "but I suggest we talk after having dinner."
I internally rolled my eyes, yet I didn't want to make a scene and embarrass him too much, so I nodded.
It was just such a simple action, yet William's eyes lit up instantly, and a cold chill ran down my spine.
"Come on," he said and held out his hand, "the crayfish is to die for!"
I ignored his hand and walked past him toward the buffet table, where I grabbed something light to eat.
After just a few bits, I had enough and put down my utensils, wiped my lips, and turned serious.
"Alpha William," I said, turning serious, "you are well aware of the fact that Alpha Xavier is my fiancé and we are about to get married. I think it's better that we keep our relationship only professional between us."
That put a smile on William's face as his eyes rolled freely over my body.
"Seriously!" I growled under my breath, "If you keep on with this act of yours, I have no problem with withdrawing from the agreement!" I boiled over with anger, losing my temper. I was here only to sign the contract, not to create unnecessary issues in my life. I knew my attitude was somewhat unacceptable, but William needed to know his place.
"I have always distinguished between public and private relationships, Ms. King," he said, finding my gaze. "It will be a pity to give up the contract just because you feel drawn to me!"
What? I choked slightly on the idea.
Was he for real?
I got up from my seat, and anger radiated from me.
"In that case, Alpha William," I said and mentally sighed frustratedly, "I am not interested in pursuing this contract any further!"
William watched me with interest; he wasn't even put off by my refusal.
"There is no loss," he said calmly. "It is my honor to work with such an outstanding beauty as yourself, Ms. King!"
William pulled the contract closer, opened it, signed his name without even reading through the pages, and handed it to me.
"However," he said as he sighed the last page, "as long as your mate is not marked, I have the right to pursue you."
I wasn't sure what to say to William. It was a private matter between Xavier and me. I gave William one more look as he handed the contract to me. There was something hidden behind those eyes of his. Something he knew. Something almost cold and sinister. My heart raced, feeling anxious to be leaving.
I slowly got to my feet, thanked him for his hospitality, and rushed out of the door, but never in my wildest dreams did I think my misery would continue when I got home to the King's residence.
