Chapter 128
Xavier's POV
"Greyson," I called over the mind link, get your ass to my office!"
"Coming," he answered, and he shut the link.
I was pacing up and down my office, and worried wasn't even describing what I felt.
If what William said is true, then I have a major problem coming my way.
"Xavier," Greyson said as I walked in, narrowing his eyes, "why do you look so worried? Is Luna okay?"
"Yes, no, yes." I looked at Greyson, and he lifted an eyebrow.
"Which one is it?" He asked.
I sighed.
"Kate is fine," I answered, taking a seat.
"Then what is the problem?" He asked.
"Alpha William Saunders," I said. "What about him?"
Another breath escaped my lips.
How do I explain this without Greyson thinking I am jealous?
I dropped my gaze, shaking my head. Greyson will understand. He always does.
"He was at the bidding last night," I said as Greyson made himself a cup of coffee.
"I know," he said, taking a seat. "I saw him stopping you outside the Hotel."
"Did you manage to see how he is reacting towards Kate?" I asked.
Greyson slowly nodded his head.
"I would say there is some interest in her."
I cut him off with a growl.
"More than just a bit of interest," I said, furious, and images of him openly gagging at Kate flashed before my eyes.
"There is nothing wrong with a bit of competition, Xavier," Greyson said, chuckling. "Are you not a bit jealous that someone actually gave Kate a bit of attention? Women fall over you constantly, and Kate handles it."
I was blinded with anger at Greyson's words, and I pounded my hands on my table.
Thank the Goddess, I didn't have a glass office table, or it would have been broken.
Greyson held his composure and shifted his head to the side.
When I was finally done with my temper tantrum, I was panting out of breath.
"Feeling better?" He asked sarcastically. He was used to my temper. At least everyone knew I had one and how short it was. Greyson, on the other hand, had a long fuse. When his temper bomb eventually goes off, all hell breaks loose. "Yes," I said, bringing my breathing under control.
"I assume there was something Alpha William said that is worrying you," Greyson said, shifting his head to the side. Many sentences in this chapter have been removed because you are not reading them on Jo b nib.c(o)m. "We both know that Kate has been in love with you for months, and I don't see her as someone who would jump from one relationship to another. So tell me, Alpha, what did William say?"
I told Greyson about William throwing the bid, the way he looked at Kate, and that he couldn't keep his eyes off her.
"But that is not what worries you, is it?"
I shook my head.
"William mentioned that he could take her from me."
"I don't understand; Kate is marked," Greyson said.
"Luna!" I corrected him.
"My apologies," Greyson said, "I mean Luna."
"Yes, but he mentioned something about ancient scripts and that if the chosen one didn't mark her mate, another could take his place," I said and growled. "Then what is keeping you from getting marked?" Greyson asked.
I hesitated, and a breath escaped my lips.
"It's complicated," I said.
Greyson looked at me, his expression confused.
"Well, there are obviously other ways that you can try to keep interested parties at bay," Greyson said.
"Like what?" I asked.
"The Luna Ceremony, for argument's sake. You two still need to conjoin the packs," he answered.
"We can only do that when we are fully marked," I growled.
"Well, then you need to think of another plan," he said, getting up. "In the meantime, I will see if I can get any more information on the 'chosen' one."
"Thanks," I said. "And Greyson," I stopped him, "sent Kelly to keep an eye on Kate for now and have Sophia report on any abnormalities."
"By that you mean-tell us when Alpha William makes his move?" Greyson asked sarcastically.
"Yes! Do you have a problem with that?" I yelled at him.
"No, but Kate, I mean, Luna is not going to like this. If she finds out..."
"I will deal with it!" I cut him off. "Now get to work before I totally lose my temper!"
Greyson left, shaking his head in disappointment at me.
It took me some time to decide what I wanted to do, and I made a call.
I wasn't a fan of spicy food, but I knew Kate loved it.
I looked at the time, seeing that it was about knockoff time, and drove to King's. I silently sat back in the car, deep in thought.
After my parents passed away and Brenda walked out with another man, I got used to relying on my own abilities. It was the first time in years that I experienced the feeling of love after being used to being alone. I scrunched my hands into fists.
I refuse to give up Kate. Not now, not ever; she is mine!
"Mine!" I growled darkly.
The car door opened, startling me, and Kate climbed in, happy to see me.
"Why didn't you send me a text message and tell me you had been waiting?" She asked, surprised.
"Then it wouldn't have been a surprise," I answered.
I stepped on the gas, rushing toward our dinner reservation.
"She is trying to find out what's going on," Ray mused. He was just as excited about my plan as I was. If this works, no one will ever think of taking Kate from me again.
I stopped at the restaurant, and I watched Kate's face light up and then fall.
"Are we dining here tonight?" She asked.
Did I do something wrong?
"I've already booked us a table," I answered, feeling my heart race in my chest. Did I just screw up our date? My plans?
"What's the matter? Don't you like it?"
"Xavier, the dishes served here are delicious, but their food is mainly spicy, and we both know you don't like spicy."
My cold heart warmed in my chest; my mate was so thoughtful.
"So, you should drive us home, and I will make us a meal."
She wants to make a meal for us. Kate wants to cook for me! Us!
"Hear, hear!" I was overly excited; this would be a sight to see.
The drive home was faster than the drive to the restaurant, and as soon as we entered, Kate rushed to the kitchen.
I watched as she pulled different ingredients from the cupboard and fridge, and soon she got started.
My curiosity got the better of me, and I walked closer to see what she was about to prepare for us to eat. My arms automatically snaked around her waist, and I got lost in her scent.
"Is there anything I can do for you?" I asked, sounding like a lost puppy. I just wanted to hold her.
Her arousal hit my nostrils, and I internally shivered, feeling happy to be able to do such things to her with just a single touch.
"Snap out of it!" Ray growled, "Ask her, ask her now!"
I ignored him, enjoying her smell, her warmth, and how she was reacting.
"Very well," Ray warned, "I will do it myself!"
Ray forced control over me, and as soon as he sniffed our mate's intoxicating scent, he too got lost in the moment and purred.
"W-w-what's going on?" Kate suddenly stuttered, sounding afraid.
That had done it, breaking the spell on me, and I fought for control.
"Ray," I growled, "give me back my body!"
"No!" He said, "She is mine!"
"She is ours," I argued, "and if you don't let go now, I will block you off for a month!"
"Give me one more minute," he said possessively.
"No! Kate is freaking out!"
Ray sighed and gave back control, but he was so adamant to be part of this that we became one when the words escaped my lips. "Marry me," we said together.
