When We Meet Again

Chapter 16

By the time Charlotte woke up, Melvin was not in the room which relieved her fear; she had thought about how awkward she would feel around him if she had woken up to see him, her mind drifting back to the conversation she overheard yesterday. She wondered if he had gone to work already or if he was at the dining table having breakfast.

Charlotte headed straight to the bathroom to take her bath; she tried to be careful with her arm. She also opted for a loose cloth she could wear without asking for help. She was ready in a few minutes and was about to head downstairs when she heard a knock on the door.

"Mia?" She called out. "Is that you?"

"Yes. Can I come in?"

"Please do."

Mia walked into the room staring at Charlotte. "You are already dressed up."

Charlotte nodded. "Yes, I am."

"I thought you might need my help that is why I am here. But I guess you don't."

"Yes, I don't. Thank you for coming though. Thanks for your care."

Mia smiled. "Breakfast is ready. You should join us downstairs."

"Is Melvin at the dining table?"

"No, he left for work already. Why did you ask?"

"I wanted him to stop by the house and help me take a document to the office." Charlotte lied.

She wasn't going to tell Mia that she had asked about Melvin because she wasn't ready to face him yet; she needed to put her thoughts together.

"Do you want me to take you home after we leave the hospital so you can get the document?" Mia asked.

"I will appreciate that," Charlotte answered.

She already had plans to go home to get Mr. Joel's business card.

"I can take you to the company too," Mia said.

Charlotte smiled. "That won't be necessary. I can always ask Bella to come and get it. I have a few things to tell her."

Mia sighed. "We should head downstairs. Breakfast will get cold."

Charlotte followed Mia downstairs to the dining table. Her mother-in-law was already seated.

"Good morning, mother." Charlotte greeted.

"Good morning, Charlotte. How is your arm? Were you able to sleep?"

Charlotte sighed. She couldn't tell her that she was unable to sleep until this morning because she overheard Melvin saying ill things about her. She smiled "I slept well."

Mrs Matt walked out of the kitchen with Kate bringing in the last dish. They said their greeting to Charlotte who answered them with a smile. "Mia, you should go call your uncle," her mother-in-law said.

Though Charlotte knew she was talking about Uncle Damien, she decided to play pretense; no one knew she saw him yesterday.

"Is that Uncle Daniel? Is he here?" She asked.

"No, it's Uncle Damien. He came after you went to sleep yesterday."

Charlotte nodded. "I see."

Mia stood up to call Uncle Damien; they came back together after a while. Seeing Charlotte, Uncle Damien smiled.

"It's good to see you, Charlotte. How have you been?"

"I am fine, Uncle. How is the family?"

Uncle Damien sat down. "They are good. They sent their regards to everyone."

Charlotte nodded but said nothing afterward.

"Charlotte, you should eat up. You can't be late for your appointment with the doctor," her mother-in-law said.

"I heard about your arm. How do you feel?" Uncle Damien asked.

"I feel better, thank you."

Silence set in as they began to eat. Charlotte was the first to leave the table alongside Mia.

"Mom, we are leaving," Mia announced from the living room.

"Don't stay out too long." Her mom answered.

"Thank you, Mia," Charlotte said the moment they got back to the house.

Mia had taken her to the hospital to get her arm checked and also took her to the house she shared with Melvin. Not only was Charlotte able to get the business card, but she also brought back some documents and books; these will keep her busy.

"You're welcome," Mia answered.

The house was quiet; Mrs. Matt had told them that her mother-in-law had gone out with her brother, Uncle Damien.

"I will help you take these, upstairs," Mia said. She helped Charlotte take the documents and books they had brought to her room, with Charlotte following behind. "I will leave you to rest."

After Mia left, Charlotte brought out the business card to call Mr. Joel; with a few people in the house, this was the perfect time. Mr. Joel did not pick up immediately and when he finally did, he asked about her health, which caught her by surprise. She had not introduced herself yet, nor did she tell him that something was wrong with her.

"Fine but how did you know that?"

"I spoke to your secretary, yesterday. She told me you had an accident and you're recuperating at home." Mr. Joel said. "How are you feeling now?"

"I feel better. Thank you for asking. I am so sorry, I could not call you as promised yesterday."

"You did, through your secretary. She put in good words for you. Get better soon. You can call me anytime you are ready. We can always reschedule the day for our dinner."

"I will do that. Thank you."

"I have to go now. I have a meeting with the board of directors. I will be waiting for your call."

The call ended and Charlotte sighed. She doesn't understand how he knew she was the one. He started the conversation before she did; she would have said that he knew she was the one because he recognized her voice. She decided to call Bella; she also needed to thank her for speaking to Mr. Joel on her behalf.

"Thank you, Bella. Mr. Joel told me that you put in good words for me." Charlotte said.

"Did he call you?" Bella asked.

"No, I did. But he seemed to know I was the one. Did you give my number to him?"

"I did not. He asked for your number when he came to the office but I could not give him without asking you. He must have gotten it from your husband. I mean the President. I saw them together." "Mr. Joel was at the company yesterday?"

"No, ma'am. He was at the company this morning. He said he had a meeting close by and he decided to stop by since you did not call him like you promised. I had to tell him what happened to you." Charlotte sighed. She seems to understand everything now.

"Thank you, Bella. How is work going?"

"Work is fine, ma'am. We missed you."

"Don't worry I will be back to work soon."

"I will... I mean we will be expecting you, ma'am."

Charlotte ended the call and lay down on the bed. She doesn't know how long she will be staying at home; she misses work so much too.
