The Sweet Pursuit by Golden Autumn

Chapter 2

In George's hand at the moment was a ten-dollar bill.

What did she take him for? Paying him after doing the deed?

The man's face was cold, and he strode to the balcony to find that the window was truly open.

It was a high floor. This building's third floor was equivalent to the fourth floor. How did she jump down?

Was he that terrifying that she would risk her life just to escape?

The cold wind blew in from the window, but it was unable to quench the evil fire in the man's heart. This woman not only humiliated him with a ten-dollar bill, but she even jumped out of the window to escape afterward... She should make sure to not let him catch her after this!

...

Suzy sneezed inside the taxi, prompting the driver to look in the rearview mirror. "Are you alright, little lady?"

The woman was so pretty, but her whole body was soaking wet. At a single glance, the driver knew she must have run into some trouble.

Suzy smiled at him. "I'm alright."

The driver smiled back. "I'm guessing you're still a student, huh? You must be more careful when you're alone."

"Yeah. Thank you, sir."

After Suzy responded to him, she took out her mobile phone and typed quickly: [Immediately destroy the surveillance footage that I appeared in at Tray Hotel from around seven to nine o'clock. Erase it completely!] [Okay!] The person on the other end did not ask anything else and merely obeyed the instructions.

The man's harsh words from earlier rang in her ears again. With things having reached this stage, Suzy no longer thought about the useless question of whether she should go to see George today. She merely had to make sure George had no clue that she was ever there.

Suzy got off at Secloud Road. She paid double the fare because she had wetted the backseat of the taxi.

Back at the villa, her maid, Ms. Wolly, was startled when she saw Suzy's wet clothes. "What happened to you, Ms. Suzy?"

"I ran into a bit of trouble. I'll head upstairs now to take a shower," said Suzy as she headed up.

"I'll prepare the bath for you, Ms. Suzy." Ms. Wolly did not dare to ask anything else. She just went upstairs to prepare the water.

A few minutes later, Suzy soaked herself in the warm bathtub, and her body gradually relaxed.

There was slight disarray in her mind. She forced herself not to think about what had happened at night and submerged her head in the water.

After taking a shower and changing into a pair of clean pajamas, Suzy's phone rang again. Ms. Wolly was blow-drying her hair.

Suzy's eyes turned cold. She asked for Ms. Wolly to head out before going to the balcony to answer the phone.

When the call was connected, Jarold hurriedly asked, "Where are you, Zee? Have you met Mr. Laine?"

Suzy's tone revealed zero emotions as she said, "Were you worried that Mr. Laine and I wouldn't be able to get along well so you drugged him to liven things up, Dad?"

Jarold was taken aback. "What do you mean? Drug him? Drugged who?! I didn't do such a thing!"

"No?" Suzy smirked. "Then why'd you make an appointment at nine with George Laine's assistant but tell me that it's at seven?"

There was silence on the other end of the line. Suzy's heart sank, and she was about to hang up the phone.

"Zee!" His voice suddenly sounded from the phone again. Jarold sounded guilt-stricken. "That was indeed my bad. I just wanted you to go see Mr. Laine at an earlier time. I thought the two of you interacting alone for a while longer would make him less resistant to the marriage."

He immediately asked again, "What happened? Did something happen to you?"

Suzy could hear the genuine concern in Jarold's tone and asked, "Was it truly not you?"

Jarold immediately said, "Of course not. No matter how difficult things are for me, I wouldn't use such sleazy means to trap my own daughter!"

Suzy did not give him a response.

Jarold asked cautiously, "Are you alright, Zee?"

Suzy replied lightly, "I'm fine. I didn't meet up with George Laine."

Jarold did not dare to ask further in detail and seemed to let out a sigh. "In any case, this entire thing is my fault. I won't ask you to see him again in the future. If you don't want to live in the villa up on that mountain, I'll come to pick you up now."

Suzy's voice softened a little. "I've been living here for more than two years. I'm alright with staying for a few more months. Don't worry, Dad. I quite like it here."

This villa was George's private property. She moved here as soon as she got married and had been living here for nearly three years.

Jarold was relieved and smiled as he said, "Alright. Then stay there for a few more months. Once the three years are up, I'll personally come and fetch my daughter home. By the way..."

He paused before continuing, "This Saturday is your mother's birthday, so come home. The words she said last time you came home weren't intentional. Don't take them to heart. She regrets it now, but she just can't bring herself to apologize to you."

Suzy replied, "I have class this Saturday morning. I'll head over after class."

"Alright. Give me a call if you need anything."

After hanging up the phone, Suzy gave it a thought and dialed another number. "Yeen, prepare a set of the latest necklace and earrings from the spring collection. I'll go pick them up within the next two days."

Once the person from the other line responded, Suzy placed her phone down. Thinking of what had happened today, the scene in the dark popped up in her mind involuntarily.

The man's heavy breathing was so close to her ears... She put her arms on the stone railing and kept her head down. It was unknown whether she was feeling vexed or hateful.

At 11 o'clock at night, George left Tray Hotel. His assistant who followed him said in a low voice, "We found the guy, Mr. Laine. It's Hans Langford, Treston Corp's vice president. He originally wanted to drug the female companion he brought with him today, but somehow, the glass fell into your hands. Mr. Langford was scared witless and has already fled River City to go to Sea City."

George's dark eyes flashed fiercely. "Well, since he has run away, then make sure he never comes back!"

The assistant nodded. "Understood!"

It was already early in the morning when George returned to the Laine family's manor. The eldest couple of the Laine family went to Landon to hold an economic seminar, while his parents had tagged along. Only the Laine family's sons and daughters were at home, and they were all already asleep at this time.

George went straight to the third floor. After taking a bath, he sat down on the rattan chair on the balcony while wrapped in a bathrobe. He took a cigarette on the coffee table to light it up.

The sparks of cigarette butts flickered under the moonlight, and George's slightly wet dark hair hung down on the corner of his forehead. Under the dark light, it could be seen that he had a handsome face with deep outlines. He looked exquisite and noble.

Inexplicably, he thought of the woman from tonight. When he was in the bathroom, he had sensed her unease and was afraid of hurting her if he was too rash. Hence, he kissed her for a long time. George did not take it a step further until she responded back. She grabbed his arm and called out his name nervously.

At that time, his nerves had been burned into chaos. Now that he thought about it, he fell into a trance and wondered if she had really called out his name.

George took out the ten-dollar bill. It was a new bill but had been soaked with water.

Now that almost the entire country relied on mobile payment, who on earth still carried cash with them?

Why was she in his room?

Who was she?

George suddenly grew curious.

He picked up his phone and made a call. "Investigate something for me. Find the woman who jumped down from the third floor tonight!"

"Yes, sir!" His assistant, Jessie Mann, only took orders and never responded with any nonsense.

The next day, after class in the morning, Suzy received a call from the counselor. She asked her to sort out the materials for the scholarship application and send them to the office.

After Suzy sorted the materials out, she received the counselor's text before heading over. [Suzy, something urgent came up and I have to go to the conference room on the ninth floor. Just bring it over here instead.] After Suzy replied to the text, she walked toward the office building.

There was a black Bentley parked on the green road outside the office building. Just as Suzy was about to walk over, she saw a tall figure getting out of the car.

Suzy looked at the man's profile and there was a jolt in her heart. She turned around subconsciously.

The lights were not turned on last night, so George might not recognize her. Nonetheless, she was the one who was at a loss right away.

When the car drove away, the man also turned into the office building area. Only then did Suzy continue to walk forward.

Unexpectedly, after turning a corner, she saw the man standing over there talking on the phone, prompting Suzy to also stop and pretend to look down at her phone. When she looked up again, George was already far away. Suzy took a deep breath, wondering why on earth was George Laine here.

After stepping into the office building and when the man was entering the elevator, Suzy slowed down. She waited for the elevator doors to close before walking over. Just as she placed her hand on the elevator button, the elevator doors that closed opened once again.

Suzy raised her head and was immediately caught off guard when she met the man's cold, questioning eyes.
