Chapter 211
Chapter 211
Maria was thrilled that her name was cleared.
During the chaos, all she could think about was getting the children to safety, but that so-
called family tutor had pulled Grayson back. In the struggle, the explosion happened, leading to utter chaos, with Maria having to evade the attacker and protect the children simultaneously. Fortunately, witnesses had seen what happened and cleared her name.
Maria smugly raised an
eyebrow in the direction of the Vanderbilt family before sitting down with Serena in her arms, feeling at ease.
Claire, however, was no longer feeling relaxed. She had casually shifted the blame earlier, never expecting to be exposed on the spot. At this moment, she felt as if she was sitting on pins and needles. Without even looking up, she could feel Lauren's murderous gaze on h "Claire!" Lauren was now seething with rage, wishing she could tear Claire apart.
Claire was one to bend and endure. She had been acting arrogantly in front of Maria before, but now, facing Lauren's anger, she immediately dropped to her
knees at Lauren's feet.
"Ma'am, ma'am, I didn't. It's, it's all his fault!" Claire tried to argue, but only then did she realize she had no way to defend herself.
Could she really say the police were lying or accuse everyone present of lying? She could only sit there, her face as pale as a ghost, trembling as she knelt on the floor.
"Officer, is it a crime to use a child as a shield like this?" Lauren asked, not bothering to waste time on Claire, instead turning to the police directly.
Compared to how Paisley's nanny had forcefully pulled Grayson away earlier, Lauren was now even more furious at Claire's actions.
She was an adult, earning a huge salary provided by the Vanderbilt family. She had promised to protect and care for Grayson, but when danger struck, she used Grayson as a shield.
Lauren could have understood if Claire had just run off and left Grayson behind, but to put Grayson in harm's way, using him as a shield, was beyond comprehension.
The police officer scratched his head, clearly disgusted by Claire's actions. However, he said, "Well, it's probably just a civil matter. Meaning, she was unlikely to face jail time or criminal charges.
Claire sighed with relief, but when she looked up, she met Dominick's cold, calculating gaze. Immediately, she had the thought that maybe jail would actually be safer.
"Officer, everything's fine here. We won't keep you from your work any
longer, Dominick said politely to the two officers. The officers didn't leave immediately. Instead, they exchanged a look and asked, "What about her?"
"Don't worry, we won't be doing anything illegal, Dominick assured them with a serious tone.
Just then, a message came through the officers' walkie-
talkies. After a brief exchange, they quickly left the scene.
Dominick turned his cold eyes on Claire, giving instructions to his men, "Take her out of here. Don't let her disturb anyone."
Claire was roughly grabbed by two of Dominick's men and dragged out. Her legs went weak with fear. "Sir, Sir! I know I was wrong. I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"
The onlookers watched the entire scene in stunned silence.
Young- Julian," Dominick called for Julian, "Hand this over to Mr. Youn
Julian's brow furrowed. He knew that Dominick was upset,
Victor Young was the best attorney in Harrowfell, and also Dominick's personal lawyer. For something as simple as civil compensation, it wasn't necessary to involve him. Especially for someone like Claire, a powerless young woman. However, Dominick's use of Victor meant he wasn't letting this go easily. At least for the next five years, Claire wouldn't be able
to live peacefully.
Dominick had indeed kept his promise to the police, not breaking any laws. But in the end, it might have been better
for Claire to sit in jail. At least there, she'd have it easier.
"Alright, I'll handle it right away," Julian nodded. Though he thought Dominick's punishment was harsh, he had no sympathy for someone like Claire.
Fear and selfishness were natural human emotions, and they could be excused. But Claire's biggest mistake was lying about it.
Lauren was still upset but knew that Dominick's way of handling this was the best. Right now, she could only stay by Grayson's side, feeling deep guilt inside.
If she had known, she never would have hired Claire. The only reason
she brought Claire in was because Grayson kept asking for Paisley.
He kept wanting Paisley to teach him this, teach him that. Yet Paisley wouldn't pay attention to him, so cold-
hearted. Feeling helpless, Lauren had hired another tutor to take over Marissa's role and be there for Grayson.
With this in mind, Lauren couldn't help but glance at Serena, feeling resentful. They were both Paisley's children, so why was only that bastard child getting all the love?
Paisley had always been very loving towards Sonny, even having arguments with her over his education
issues. But now, she didn't even care about Sonny.
"Poor Sonny, how could he have such a mother?" Lauren choked up, rubbing her precious grandson's small hand. "Sonny must have seen that kid and thought Paisley was there, so he ran over. He just wanted to see his mom. Paisley is so heartless!" Meanwhile, the intern doctor had finished treating Grayson's wound and moved
on to another patient who was seriously injured.
Grayson was still unconscious from the blood loss and injuries. It was clear how badly he had been hurt. But Serena only had minor scratches and was safely sitting in the nanny's arms. Lauren felt an increasing sense of unfairness. "Alright," Reginald patted Lauren on the shoulder. I've contacted Jonathan, and they'll be transferring Sonny to a VIP room shortly
He then looked at Serena. This was his first time seeing Paisley's daughter. Serena was very cute, with eyebrows and eyes that looked very much like Paisley's. She seemed like a very well-
behaved little girl. If only she were his granddaughter.
After Marissa's incident, just like Lauren, Reginald had once thought about reconciling Dominick and Paisley. After all, Paisley had sacrificed a lot for the Vanderbilt family, and the family truly owed her.
But that feeling of guilt only lasted for a while before being replaced by rational thought. Especially after seeing Dominick spiral again because of Paisley while Paisley remained unmoved. Reginald didn't feel so convinced anymore. Moreover, Paisley had a questionable daughter. The question was whether Serena was conceived immediately after her divorce from Dominick, or if it was from an affair during their marriage.
