Chapter 416 The Monster That Only Dares to Act Recklessly in the Dark
In the back seat, Zoe tried to grab Susanne, but she shook her off. "Don't touch me." Susanne always thought Zoe was dumb and pathetic. And she hated herself for being so helpless.
Zoe was pissed too. She grabbed Susanne's shoulder and glared at her. "What are you even complaining about? We brought you out to cheer you up, and this is how you act?"
Maybe the word "we" hit a nerve with Susanne. She shoved Zoe away hard. Susanne had been trained to be a socialite by the Harrison family, always acting and speaking a certain way. But right now, she was too mad to care. "We? Mom, don't you think you're disgusting?"
She pointed at Gregory, who was driving, and yelled, "You're from the Harrison family. You should have some long-term vision. My dad died, and you married him right away. How can you be so cheap?"
Susanne's words dripped with disdain for Gregory. If Zoe had married someone from an old family in Greafury City, Susanne wouldn't be so upset. But Zoe had picked a nouveau riche, someone with no family background.
As soon as Susanne finished, Zoe raised her hand to slap her, but Gregory stopped her. He reached out and blocked Zoe, saying, "She's still a kid. She doesn't get it. Don't blame her."
Susanne glared at Gregory. "What does it matter to you? Let her hit me."
Zoe was fuming. The Coleman family in Central City had fallen apart overnight, and her cousin Cosmo was now struggling. Now the Harrison family was in a similar spot. Even though she didn't think much of Gregory, marrying him at least meant they wouldn't have to worry about money. Until Susanne made it big, she had to keep Gregory happy.
Thinking of this, Zoe tried to pull away from Gregory's hand. "Gregory, let go. I need to teach her a lesson today."
"Enough." Gregory's voice suddenly boomed. Both Zoe and Susanne were shocked.
Gregory was surprised by his own voice and quickly said, "Zoe, Susanne is still young. She doesn't understand much yet. As adults, we shouldn't hold it against her."
He then looked at Susanne. "The Harrison family has a long history in Greafury City. I know you look down on me, but I really like your mom. I can't have kids of my own, and I really hope to have a child. It's okay if you don't like me as your stepdad now. We have a long time ahead."
Susanne pressed her lips together and stayed quiet, but inside she was full of contempt. Seeing this, Gregory sat back and said, "I might not be able to give you a higher social status, but I can still get you whatever you want. You're about to take the SAT. Don't let this get to you. Later, you can buy whatever you want."
At the fanciest mall in Greafury City, Sylvester slowly parked his luxury car. He had planned to book the whole mall. He didn't like crowds, but Lela seemed to enjoy the hustle and bustle. So Lela stopped him from booking the whole place. Lela leaned against the car window, looking at the busy crowd outside with excitement in her eyes. She came from a distant forest tribe, far from modern civilization. Later, she was captured by The Immortal Man for experiments. Even though she escaped, she spent all those five years building her own power and had never really shopped in a mall.
Plus, she was a Mutant, a creature that avoided sunlight, only daring to be reckless in the dark, always worried about being captured by The Immortal Man. She never dared to openly experience something like this. Shopping in broad daylight was so normal for others, but a huge luxury for her.
