Chapter 0090
Caroline's POV:
Had any outsider witnessed how Mia and the two men treated me during my stay at the village, they would have been astounded to find out these people were my kidnappers.
They had treated me with nothing but kindness and respect during this time. Brook and Harry took a bit of getting used to, but once they warmed up to me, they were such sweet men.
For the first time in a long while, I found myself without concern. Even my stomach cancer hadn't been giving me too many problems. George was also adapting to his new life fairly well, and I was allowed to see him whenever I pleased.
George had grown a particular fondness for Alice and would cling to her as if she was his sister. Alice, the poor girl, never felt annoyed by George's antics, always indulging even the most bothersome behaviors.
Why did fate always treat the most innocent of people with such contempt? Alice didn't deserve her fate at the hands of this disease, but despite the hand she was dealt by life, she still faced every day with a smile. It was honestly inspiring to witness, and I only wished I could be as strong as her.
Mia's words about Harry still lingered in my mind. I couldn't help but be curious about Harry's past. How could a man so famous and successful end up living in a small, forgettable village like this? As we passed each other each day, I couldn't shake the sense that he was worried about something.
The question surrounding his past was one that lingered in my mind from time to time, and I had half the mind to ask him about it. However, I never got the chance. It seemed like he took every excuse he could find to avoid being in the same room with me alone. Maybe, just maybe, I could offer him some help. If needed, I could turn to Martin for assistance. He never turned down the chance to give me a helping hand, and I missed our friendship dearly.
On a particularly sunny day, I found myself with the urge to explore my surroundings a bit. "Hey, Mia!" I called my new friend. "It's alright if I take a walk around the village, right? I saw a river that I wanted to visit; maybe stick my feet in and enjoy the water." Mia visibly brightened up at my request and gave me an enthusiastic smile. "Of course, hon! I'm glad you've taken a liking to our humble home. You won't get sights like this around the city. Just make sure you get back before it's too dark, alright?" Appreciating her care, I gave a firm nod. "It'll just be an hour or so. I'll be back before supper!" With that, I headed out to spend some time outside on this lovely day.
The path towards the river was one surrounded by vast trees that offered plenty of shade on this hot day. The iver itself was a gently flowing body of water that soothed my nerves, and the flowers that grew along its bank were too pretty not to admire.
As I was walking along the riverbank, I noticed a figure standing in the water. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was a man naked from the waist up.
"Oh my gosh!" I squeaked and averted my eyes before I could even get a good look at him."I'm so sorry, sir! I didn't mean to look!"
The man let out a shout of surprise.
"Who allowed you to come here?" he barked, anger staining his tone. There was something familiar about his voice, though; something I couldn't place. Without thinking, I looked back up to identify him. He gasped and spun around.
Wr
immediately, but I got a glimpse of
his face just in time.
I recognized this man, that much I knew, but his face was different. He looked much younger than before. Even the horrible scar that had been on his forehead was gone.
"You" My endeavor to ask was interrupted by an angered growl from the man.
"Go back and forget what you have seen," he demanded with a scowl, still keeping his face hidden as he spoke to me. "If you dare breathe a word about this to anyone, I'll never let you speak again!"
I should have been scared stiff by
the blatant threat against my life, but strangely enough, I only felt calm. The tips of his ears burned red, exposing his embarrassment as he struggled to pretend that he was a heartless killer. I knew better.
"Don't worry, I won't," I promised, "I'll leave you alone now." Discomfort resting in my chest. I never imagined that I would stumble upon Harry's greater secret.
With that, I turned and ran back to the village, my mind reeling with what I'd seen. Why did he have to be disguised in this way?
